FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
(1) Why is nutrition an issue today? Aren't
Americans the best-fed people in the world?
American's aren't eating better, they are merely eating more! The
nutrient composition of American food has declined dramatically in
the past 50 years, according to Virginia Worthington, PhD, of Johns
Hopkins University. Our soils have been depleted of much of the
essential nutrients required by the human body. Irradiation of foods
have also reduced their nutritional value.

(2) Why are 60% of Americans obese and why has
obesity become an epidemic in America today?
We are well fed and undernourished! Obesity is a form of
malnutrition. The body is taking in an over-abundance of
so-called foods in an attempt to assimilate the nutrients necessary
to sustain life. Today's refining process strips foods of their
nutrients. Junk food is mostly fat, sugar and empty calories. Fifty
years ago nutritional supplementation, in many instances, would not
have been necessary. Today it is vital for good health.

(3) Are there particular "warning signs" that
the practitioner should look for in patients who might require a
nutritional supplement program?
Yes. Chronic low-level health problems, such as back fatigue,
joint inflammation, connective tissue trauma, muscle spasm, obesity,
sexual decline, constipation, stomach aches and other disorders are
being caused or exacerbated by a nutritional deficiency.

(4)
Is there a simple test to determine if a patient should take
nutritional supplements?
Yes. A simple pH saliva test is one of the best and most inexpensive
methods for determining if a patient should take nutritional
supplements. A healthy human body is slightly alkaline with a pH of
7.2 to 7.4. If the pH test shows an acid level of 6.8 or below, it
is a clear indication that the patient's nutritional needs are not
being met.

(5) Why are
supplements sold in grocery and health food stores cheaper then many
sold at wholesale to holistic practitioners?
Many supplements sold through grocery, drug, and health food stores
are cheaply manufactured from synthetic ingredients, are poorly
assimilated by the body, usually contain insufficient amounts of
specific nutrients to boost the immune system, and are usually not
fresh because they are produced in such large quantities. You really
do get what you pay for! Some examples:
a.
Supplements from natural products are superior to synthetics since
any naturally associated nutritional factors may be missing from
synthetically reproduced ingredients. The human body knows when it
is being tricked!
b.
Organically grown and/or wild-crafted (picked in the wild) are
preferred over ingredients grown with synthetic fertilizers and
sprayed with pesticides.
c. Each
nutrient should be in a form determined by research to be most
easily assimilated by the body. For example, calcium citrate is
better assimilated then calcium carbonate.
d. Each
nutrient should be selected for its potency. For example, Panax
ginseng should be derived from a root at least seven years old to be
effective.

(6) How
important is freshness in nutritional supplements?
Product freshness is extremely important. Outdated nutritional
products lose much of their potency and effectiveness. For example,
vitamins C and the B complex group lose potency rapidly as do many
herbs and most enzymes. Often what the consumer purchases off the
shelf is ineffective and virtually worthless!

Should holistic health professionals prescribe
nutritional products?
Yes. Most problems that holistic practitioners are called upon
to treat tend to favor a protocol involving nutritional
supplementation. For example, back pain can be ameliorated with
prescribing the proper anti-inflamatories; nervous tension and
stress can be effectively relieved with herbal carminatives;
Irritable Bowel Syndrome can be addressed with a combination formula
of fiber and herbal ingredients. The inclusion of nutritional
supplementation not only adds an extra income stream to the practice
but directly benefits his patients.

(9) What is the major benefit of prescribing nutritional products?
In a word, patient retention! Nutritional well being is an
on-going situation. For example, the woman with arthritis or back
pain may need a few adjustments to ease her pain but she requires an
on-going protocol of cal-mag supplementation and most likely natural
anti-inflammatories as well.

(10) What are the guidelines a holistic practitioner should use in
selecting a particular line to prescribe?
In evaluating a particular line of products, the following
guidelines will ensure the practitioner's entry into nutritional
drug alternatives will be as trouble free as possible:
a. All
products should carry a reasonable expiration date of not more than
a year from manufacture. Titan's policy is to replace expired
product with new product at no cost to the health professional.
b. The
company should have extensive research available on each and every
product in its product line. Patient literature should also be
available.
c. The
product line should be supported with a 100% guarantee.
d. The
company should be known and well regarded by the health profession
and not some fly by night company with the latest fad products.
e. The
company should offer a help desk where the practitioner can receive
guidance and advice and have his questions answered knowledgeably.

(11) What are the caveats the practitioner should be aware of before adding
nutrition to his practice?
There are several caveats, or concerns, the practitioner should be
aware of before incorporating nutrition into his practice.
Specifically:
a. The
practitioner should be aware of his motives before embarking on a
supplementation program. The primary purpose should be to help the
patient achieve health, enhance the practice, and provide an
ancillary income, in that order. A nutritional protocol should not
be considered as a way to make an extra buck with minimal effort. If
the patient perceives that the practitioner is "selling" him a
product rather then prescribing a course of therapy, the
practitioner will lose credibility.
b.
Beware of hucksters! As is true with any growth industry, the
nutrition field has, unfortunately, attracted unscrupulous
individuals and organizations out to make a fast buck with worthless
- and sometimes dangerous - products. The practitioner should
remember that nutritional therapy is not about discovering wondrous
new substances that cure all ills. It is not about snake oil!
Rather, it is knowing the systems of the body and what kind of
nutrition each system requires - and then providing it.
c. The
practitioner should make a commitment and read the scientific and
clinical literature provided by the nutrition company. Most
reputable companies offer knowledgeable assistance to the
practitioner when questions of nutritional protocol arise.

(12) With all the concern about "mad cow" disease in Europe, should I be
wary of nutritional products containing bovine glandulars?
Yes, it pays to ask questions concerning the origination of
glandulars. Glandulars should be certified for purity and also free
of the steroids and antibiotics utilized on most beef cattle in this
country. Any glandulars utilized in Titan's products are procured
from New Zealand and carry a certified seal of purity by the New
Zealand government. New Zealand has health and safety standards for
their farm animals that exceeds those of both the United States and
Europe. Before they are incorporated into Titan products, they are
again tested for purity in our FDA approved facility.
