Obese Nation - How did we become so Fat and . . .
What can we do about it?
Obesity is approaching epidemic proportions with 64 percent of American adults
overweight and 23 percent classified as obese! To make maters worst, there are
almost three times as many overweight children today as in 1980 and increasing
yearly at an alarming rate.52
Obesity-related health problems are costing American citizens about $117 billion
a year. Clinical
studies have linked obesity to birth defects,53, 54 ovarian cancer,55
lung cancer in women,56 and diminished intelligence in both sexes.57
Determining your Body Mass Index (BMI).
The accepted method that closely correlates with both body fat and metabolic
complications is the Body Mass Index or BMI. A simple four (4) step calculation
for determining your BMI is:
1. Write down your weight in pounds:
_________
2. Multiply that number by 703:
_________
3. Multiply your height in inches by itself:
_________
4. Divide the answer to No. 2 by the answer to No.
3: _________ This is your BMI
A BMI of 25 or more indicates an overweight condition while a BMI of 30 or more
is obese.
Fad Diets & Drugs Don't Work!
Unfortunately, fad diets and dangerous drugs have been the typical solution to losing
weight, making obesity the most prevalent form of malnutrition in America today.58
Each year $171 billion dollars in medical costs, and 500,000 premature deaths, are
directly caused by an unhealthy lifestyle, states the American Medical
Association.
As with any "hot" growth industry, the weight control field has attracted a
growing multitude of con-men and corporate sharks out to make a quick buck at the expense
of the consumer and his health. All promise rapid weight loss with no effort.
The diet
industry has grown to $40-billion a year because, ironically, the success of
this industry depends upon the consistent failure of its products and programs!
Most products and programs in the marketplace are pure scams because (1) the
average person is desperate to lose weight and (2) does not understand the
mechanics of weight loss. (See Evaluating Nutritional Claims - Separating Fact
form Fiction at:
www.titanlabs.com/evaluatingnutritional.htm)
Dieting in general leads to the emaciation of muscle cells, bloating of fat cells,
accumulation of toxic fats in tissues, and fatigue. The more rapid the weight loss, the
higher the risk of heart complications from muscle loss.59
Before embarking on any health and fitness routine to reduce body fat and increase
vitality, it is important for the patient to understand how the body converts food to
energy and why 90% of today's diet programs ultimately fail.
Body fat is simply stored calories - 2,700 stored
calories per pound. (Although a pound of pure fat contains 3,500 calories, body
fat consists of fat plus water and supportive tissues). To lose excess fat, the
patient must burn more calories than he or she consumes. To lose one pound of
fat a week, a person must create a caloric deficit of 386-500 calories per day.
Period.60
To achieve this caloric deficit, the person must either reduce his calorie
intake from food by this amount, or exercise and burn extra calories by this
amount. The most effective way to attain, and then maintain a desirable body
composition is a combination of both - increase physical activity and exercise
while decreasing caloric intake.
Thermogenic weight loss products, such as Factor
Two: Enerbolic Thermogen, act
to elevate the metabolic "set Point" of the body
(resulting in increased calorie expenditures) while providing extra energy
needed for greater physical activity. It's a win-win situation!
Why most diet programs actually induce obesity!
First, most commercial diet programs rely on
restricting calories and/or juggle foods around in strange combinations that may
jeopardize the patient's health. The body responds to this drastic reduction in calories
by reducing the basal metabolic rate - the rate at which the body burns calories at rest.
The evolutionary advantage of this to our primitive ancestors is obvious. In times of
famine when food became scarce, the body conserved energy by cutting back the metabolic
rate and burning fewer calories.
Unfortunately for modern homo sapiens on a diet, this genetically programmed reduction in
metabolic rate makes it difficult to lose fat and almost impossible to keep it off.
Studies on both normal and obese individuals who followed low calorie diets for several
weeks showed a 15 to 30 percent drop in their metabolic rates!61
Second, most heavily advertised diet programs are
low-carbohydrate diets that "trick" the body into losing water weight quickly.62
The results are always temporary and often dangerous. The overweight individual is trying
to lose excess stored body fat, not lean muscle tissue and water!
Third, most commercial diet programs cause the
patient to lose muscle tissue along with fat because the importance of exercise is
downplayed or never mentioned. Without proper exercise during dieting, the body will turn
to its own tissues for fuel, breaking down muscle protein while conserving fat.
This muscle is lost proportionately from every part of the body, including the vital
organs of the heart and liver. These muscle tissue losses are critical since fats are
burned for energy inside of muscle and liver cells.
The end result is the dieter/patient cannot maintain his or her weight loss because the
body's metabolic rate has been reduced to conserve calories and less muscle tissue is
available to burn them. As soon as normal eating habits are resumed, fat will come back
faster than it left! This is the yo-yo syndrome that most dieters complain about.
The Enerbolic Activator "5 Star" Fitness Program
for lifetime vitality and body fat control incorporates (1) attitude
adjustment; (2) stimulating thermogenesis to raise metabolism; (3) establishing
nutritional balance; (4) detoxification to flush poisons from fatty tissue; and (5)
exercise on a regular basis.
Note. The following health and fitness recommendations pertaining to over-weight
individuals are equally applicable to athletes and bodybuilders.
1) Attitude Adjustment. Forget the bathroom
scale, it is not an accurate indicator of the quality of body weight. When you eat and
exercise properly, heavier muscle mass begins replacing lighter fatty tissue. You begin to
look and feel better as body composition improves.
Looking good and feeling good is directly related to body fat composition - and
has very little to do with body weight. In fact, many underweight individuals
are clinically obese because their body mass is over 25 percent fat!
Be Kind to Yourself! The pursuit of good health and well-being can and should be fun. Many
individuals trying to lose fat are unduly harsh on themselves. They assume if they aren't
doing everything in their fat-loss plan to perfection, they are failing and might as well
give up. This kind of thinking guarantees failure.
Remember, no one is perfect. If you fail in your Enerbolic Thermogen Fitness efforts as
much as one-fifth of the time, that's still an 80 percent success rate, which is certainly
respectable.
Visualize the New You! The human mind is an incredibly complex and powerful organ. It has
been said that "what the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve." You
have only to look around you to see the truth in this statement.
Everyone has a mental picture of what he or she would like to look like. Find a picture of
the kind of body you want to have and cut it out (be realistic). Then find a photo (head shot) of
your-self and paste it over the picture of the body you want. Now you have a worthy goal
to work toward. This motivational technique has worked with numerous athletes and
body-builders.
Modify your Behavior. There is a strong relationship between hours of TV watched and
incidence of obesity.63 Television viewing burns almost no calories and
encourages frequent trips to the refrigerator. Why not jump on a stationary bicycle when
you're saddled at home in front of the TV? Why drive where you can walk? Why take the
elevator when you can take the stairs.
Small modification in behavior are more successful in achieving fitness and weight loss
than exotic diets leading to failure and potential health problems!
2.) Stimulate Thermogenesis by taking
Enerbolic Thermogen as directed, then enjoy a brisk walk, jog, swim, hike,
play tennis, enjoy a scenic bike ride - and do it continuous for at least 30
minutes, three times a week.
Lipids (fats) provide approximately 50% of the total energy production in the resting or
basal metabolic state, therefore weight reduction is greatly enhanced with nutrients that
promote thermogenesis by increasing the basal metabolic set point at which the body burns
calories at rest.64
The combination of nutrients formulated into Factor Two: Enerbolic Thermogen promote
thermogenesis which increases the metabolic set-point while also enhancing the body's
ability to catabolize fat when food is broken down during the digestive process. Solid
evidence supports this concept.65
3.) Establish A Nutritional Balance. Less than 25
percent of total calories in each meal should come from fat.
It takes 255 calories to burn one ounce of fat, but only 113 calories to burn one ounce of
protein or carbohydrate!
A Cornell University study showed that when women were allowed to eat as much as they
wanted, with the only restriction being that they had to consume low-fat foods (only 20 to
25% of calories as fat), they lost weight!66
Consume "low-glycemic" foods. Simple carbohydrates, such as white bread,
white rice, pasta, and potatoes are high-glycemic foods that turn into blood
glucose much more rapidly than high-fiber foods such as fruits, vegetables,
legumes, and whole grains.
The abrupt infusion of blood sugar from fast-acting
simple carbohydrates unleashes a surge of insulin so great that it overshoots
the metabolic mark and drives blood-sugar levels lower than normal. Low blood
sugar makes us feel hungry, so we reach for another high-glycemic carb which
starts the cycle all over again. Weight gain becomes inevitable.67
The majority of each meal should consist of complex carbohydrates (60%)
which are unquestionably the most efficient fuel for the human body to burn and
will produce quicker and more long-last fat loss.68
Forget about Atkins, the Zone, and Sugar Busters.
Less than 25 percent of total calories in each meal should come from protein (meat, fowl,
fish, cheese). Most Americans eat too much protein which can stress the kidneys and liver,
drain calcium from bone stores, and cause hepatic encephalopathy (mental
confusion). Clinic evidence indicates that excess protein intake is conducive to
obesity.69 Even the most active
athlete or behemoth bodybuilder needs little more than 170 grams (6 ounces) of protein
daily.70
Eat foods as close to their natural state as possible. There are over 2,800 FDA-approved
additives with another 10,000 additives being "incidental" to the agriculture
and food processing industry.71
Stay away from anything in a can, bottle, or package with a long shelf life. Food
spoils -
non-foods don't! Avoid at all costs food substitutes such as Olestra (fake fat), margarine
(fake butter), and hydrogenated oil (fake oil) which are alien to the body and can cause
serious long term health problems.
4.) Detoxify to flush poisons from fatty tissue.
Obesity is almost always associated with toxicity, as a majority of toxins are stored in
fatty tissue.72
Increase Fiber Consumption. Fiber can have a major impact on weight gain as evidenced by
the almost complete lack of obesity in cultures consuming a diet high in fiber.73
Other benefits of fiber include inducing satiety, preventing constipation, and stabilizing
blood glucose levels.74
Note. The average American consumes 15 grams of fiber a
day while doctors recommend 20 to 30 grams to maintain a healthy digestive system. (Fiber
is found only in plant food).
If fiber consumption is below recommendations, Factor Eight: Natura Cleanse
should be incorporated into the diet.
The liver is the main fat burning organ in the body. It removes fatty
acids from the blood stream and regulates fat and carbohydrate metabolism. When
the liver becomes over-taxed, the result is "fatty liver," a common form of
liver dysfunction in persons over 50. It is almost impossible to lose weight
with a "fatty liver" condition.75
For this reason, the health professional should consider prescribing a liver
detox supplement such as Factor Nine: Liverzyne for a patient in a weight
loss program.
Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water daily. Water suppresses the appetite naturally
and helps the body metabolize stored fat. Studies have shown that an increase in water
intake can actually reduce fat deposits. Water also helps to prevent sagging skin because
cells are buoyed by water, which plumps the skin and leaves it clear, healthy and
resilient.76
5.) Exercise Regularly. Although fat loss is 20
percent dependent on exercise and 80 percent dependent on food, exercise - especially
aerobic - is absolutely mandatory for quick and permanent weight loss.77
The burning of fat requires oxygen, which is to say, fat can only be burned aerobically.78
Exercise increases oxygen uptake, which is used in the oxidation
of fats. Thirty minutes
or more of exercise at low intensity increases fat-burning.
Exercise, both aerobic and weight training, also increases the levels of enzymes which
utilize fat. The net result is an increase in the overall ability of muscle to burn fat.
Remember, it takes 2,700 calories of energy to burn one pound of fat and muscles use a lot
of energy.
Plan your Exercise for Maximum Fat Burning Effect. The secret lies not in the calories
burned by exercise, but in using exercise to increase metabolic rate for hours after the
exercise period. Many individuals become discouraged because they exercise at the wrong
time! A vigorous aerobics class in the evening has minimum effect on metabolic rate.
A little goes a long way! Losing as little as 6 percent of your body
weight can result in significant improvement in blood pressure, cholesterol, and
blood sugar levels..79
It's never too late! In a recent research study, participants who were
over the age of 65 and had always been sedentary reduced their risk of heart
disease by 36 percent and their risk of cancer by 51 percent when they adopted
an active lifestyle during the study.80
