  Researchers for the first time have established that long-term exposure to fine particles of air pollution from coal-fired power plants, factories and diesel trucks can greatly increase an individual's risk of dying from lung cancer. (Journal of the American Medical Association, March 6, 2002). In fact, the Journal concluded that people living in heavily polluted metropolitan areas are 16 percent more at risk of dying of lung cancer than people in less polluted areas.

  These latest findings come as the Bush administration is considering proposals for scaling back tough government legal action against dozens of aging coal-fired power plants and oil refineries that violated the law by expanding without installing anti-pollution equipment!

  Air pollution cuts short the lives of more than 30,000 people each year, or 10 times the number of people killed in 9-11. Individuals in cities such as New York die prematurely from heart disease, lung cancer, and asthma. Asthma rates alone have more than doubled since 1980 and now accounts for about $12.7 billion in health care costs each year.

  Most Americans think their exercise habits are just fine, according to the results of a Reuters Health survey. The poll found that 88% of adults and 84% of adolescents said they were getting enough exercise to maintain their health. And 76% of parents felt their kids were adequately active.

  "It appears perceptions do not meet reality," states Dr. Kim Graber, president of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 61% of adults are now considered overweight while 26% of those are considered obese, or grossly overweight. (Even childhood obesity is now at epidemic proportions with more children developing adult-onset diabetes as a direct result).

  According to the Surgeon General, obesity has been linked to 300,000 deaths per year and threatens to wipe out progress fighting cancer, heart disease, and other ailments.
